The nations he left in the land that the Israelites possessed at that time were meant for teaching their youth how to fight wars and also learn to observe the commandments which God had commanded to their fathers (1-4). Bad enough the Israelites had lost enthusiasm, instead of disassociating themselves from those other nations; they intermarried with them and served their gods. The inability to understand God’s plan upon one’s life brings about disastrous results that may even end up to death. The Israelites forgot their God, and served Baal and Ashtoreth, and by this they were defeated and enslaved by their enemies (7-8). But when the people of Israel cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel, who had the Spirit of the Lord upon him, and he saved them,…..(9-10). So the land had rest forty years…(11). Forsaking God has lamentable consequences to his people. Thanksgiving: Praise God that our Lord Jesus never dies, and he is our peace (Eph. 2.14); believing in him brings us permanent security.
