Tuesday 23 January Amos 2.4-16 Qn.2
For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment (4): the Prophet Amos says that God will rise up to punish the nations for their sins, where Judah will not be exempted. While other nations will be punished for their offenses towards others, Judah will be punished for not obeying God’s law by following their forefathers’ falsehood. Israel will also be punished for rebelling against God’s laws and orders, but above all for not defending the weak in their midst (6-8). Strive to lead a godly life in everything. Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorites before them (9): It might be possible that the Amorites were stronger than other nations in their vicinity, so in this chapter God destroyed them completely, allowing the Israelites to take possession of the land of Canaan. Though the Amorites were as strong as the Oaks, yet they were defeated (9). Consider: For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the the law will be judged by the law (Rom 2.12). Song 192 (Praises)
