Thursday 17th July Acts 19.11-20

July 17

Qn. 3

…, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” (13): This city of Ephesus was saturated by all kinds of divinations, by which people could even make a living (19.19). As these things did not require physical strength, Sceva’s sons, having observed Paul performing miracles in Jesus’ name, thought that applying their tricks in God’s ministry could work as well! Surprisingly they succeeded in the beginning, yet there is no other name given under heaven given among men through we must be saved (Acts 4.12). Brethren, you should bear in mind that performance of any miracle doesn’t necessarily mean that the person met Jesus personally.  ….And the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled (17): The disguise of Sceva’s sons and its consequences brought fear to a lot of people. This was beneficial in two ways: 1) The LORD’s name was extolled; 2) Some people repented, and their tools for divinations were given out and put on fire. God has multiple ways to reach out to his people. Consider: God is the one who performs miracles through us, for the purpose of receiving our praises.
