August 14

Qn. 4

.., “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (21): The Pharisees put him to the test around tax payment, and violation of this to the Roman government could be for them an opportunity to have him killed. Payment of tax could be an indication of subjection to those in authority at that time. Jesus gave out a denarius to show that a genuine Christian must be subject to leadership (Rom. 13.1). Though the Pharisees and the Sadducees were different, yet they had something in common, which was hatred for Jesus, for he was kind of hindering their benefits and dignity. They asked him a question to test him. If he denied the tax, the Herodians could accuse him of violation of Roman laws, and on the other hand if he supported it; the Pharisees could accuse him of violation of Jewish laws. Jesus knew all about their evil schemes, as no people’s thoughts and plans can be hidden from him (Acts 15.8). Jesus’ answer blocked the way for the fulfillment of their evil schemes. Giving out to Caesar what is his means humility and submission. Paying tax is a good thing for every Christian. Consider:  Make sure that you always set a good example in paying taxes required by the law in your country.
