Saturday 27 January Amos 5.18-27 Qn.4
Why would you have the day of the Lord? (18) The day of the Lord was the day that the Lord would have to reveal himself as the controller of everything on earth and all men had to humble themselves before him (Isaiah 2.11, 17). It is clear that the Israelites wished for the day to hurry up because they didn’t understand enough what that day really meant in their context; but this was to be even more terrible than they could have thought (20). It was more of their judgment, than their being liberated (19). We as believers of the New Testament, we are also anticipating the day of Jesus’ return (1Kor.1.8). Therefore, we have to be prepared in a different way to that of the Israelites at that time. We need to believe in God and ensure that we keep ourselves sanctified, for us not to be blamed on that day. “I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies (21). It’s not only Amos who prophesied that God does not delight in hypocritical assemblies; even Isaiah prophesied it (Isaiah 1.11-14). Consider: Let’s be careful and avoid the leaven of the Pharisees.
