Saturday 19th July Acts 20.1-16

July 19

Qn. 1, 3

On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread,…(7): This same day could be known as our Lord’s day because that’s the day on which he resurrected (Jn. 20.1), it was also when the Holy Spirit came down (Lev. 23.9-11; Acts 2.1), and it was even the same day when the early church could gather (1 Cor. 16.2). The writer Justin, who was martyred, who was of the period around 155 AD, put in his writings that the early church used to gather on the day of our Lord, the day on which Jesus resurrected. The issue of days has ever been an issue, and even today some people are feeling guilty for not observing a certain day. Yet when Paul wrote to Colossians, he reminded them that no one should judge them against days, and the like (Col. 2.16-17). The Spiritual life of a person does not depend on any day or festival, but on the fact that Jesus has made her or him a new creation. Consider: If you have not yet committed your life to Jesus, so that he transforms it, days and festivals cannot lead you anywhere, they are merely symbolic.
