Thursday 15th May Judges 1.1-15
THE INTRODUCTION OF THE BOOK OF JUDGES:
This book was written by Samuel during the reign of Saul around 1,000 years BC. It narrates the hardships the Israelites went through for 300 years following the death of Joshua. It was a very difficult time that involved turmoil and rejection of the LORD. The people known as judges played also the role of chiefs, deliverers, and even commanders of the LORD’s army. They were not only appointed for judicial purposes, but also guiders of the LORD’s people, channeling them into the right direction and reminding them of the LORD’s law. Whenever the Israelites sinned against the LORD, he could give them in the hands of their enemies, and when they returned to him; he could raise them a judge to deliver and save them from those enemies. This book teaches us that the LORD is Holy; hates sin, and cannot help judging sinners. On the other hand it indicates that he is merciful, and extends his hand to those who repent, giving them back his peace and blessing them because of his love. This book’s contents include—1.1-3.6: Introductory words; 3.7-16.31: The account of the twelve (12) judges; 17.1-21.25: Period of turmoil.
Qn. 3
“Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?” (1): The battles during Joshua’s leadership rendered the Canaanites weak. What the people of Israel had to do next was to inhabit the land of Canaan, which God had given to them. The Israelites asked God the tribe that could go first (1-2). Most of the problems we incur in life result from carrying out anything on our own without consulting God first. And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it…(8): Any time the people of Israel relied on God and accepted his leadership, they could win all battles. We also have some lessons to learn from them in our calling to expand the kingdom of God: 1) Asking for God’s advice in all our undertakings; 2) Obeying and following his advice; 3) Accepting to work with other people in unity. Prayer Request: Pray for Church leaders and those of Christian organizations to always ask God how to carry out his ministry, and also to work together in unity.
