Wednesday 28th May Judges 8.22-35
Qn. 3
Gideon said to them, “I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the LORD will rule over you.” (23): After Gideon had defeated the Midianites, the Israelites asked him to rule over them because he had saved them from the hand of the Midianites. He declined their request and told them that the LORD will rule over them. He considered that they did not defeat the Midianites by their own power, but that it was the LORD who had enabled them. Therefore, the Israelites had to remain under the LORD’s leadership. Gideon’s way of action benefited the Israelites, as their land had rest for 40 years (22, 23, 28). Gideon refused to become king yet he behaved like some of them of that time. He had a lot of wives and concubines. Far be it that a courageous man like him ends up in disarray! As soon as Gideon died,…and made Baal-berith their god (33): After Gideon died, the Israelites turned again and whored after Baals, and made Baal-berith their god. That’s another way Satan misleads God’s people. Our God is more than able, and doesn’t need any support. Advice: Pray for Christians that as they grow old physically, that they also undergo spiritual growth, so that God takes them from glory to glory. Song 426 (Praises).
