Wednesday 21st May Judges 5.1-15

May 21

Qn. 2, 3

Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Ahinoam on that day  (1):  Composing songs to celebrate the nation’s victory was part of Israelites’ culture (Ex. 15.1-18; 1 Sam. 18.6-7). After the victory of Deborah and Barak over Sisera and his men, they sang. This song of joy and praise to God, Deborah repeats the account of the wars fought previously, reminding the people about God’s majesty (4, 5). She also declares what the celebrations are all about: she sings reminding the Israelites the hard times they passed through as a result of forsaking God and sought other gods (6-8). “My heart goes out to the commanders of Israel who offered themselves willingly among the people…(9): Deborah does not take the credit alone, but considers also those who came from other tribes to fight the battle with her. This is a good example for all leaders to emulate, so that they take time to thank those under them for their role for the shared success. Advice: If you become successful in anything, remember to call everyone who was involved in some way and thank them.
