…, And the LORD gave them into the hand of Midian seven years (1): For 40 years the Israelites were at rest and peace under the leadership of Deborah and Barak, after which thy rebelled against the LORD. As consequence of that, the Midianites made a coalition with other nations, and together waged war against the Israelites for 7 years (3-5). Breaching God’s promises given Satan a foothold and this for him becomes an opportunity to defeat you even in things you considered to be simple. “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian, do not I send you?” (14). What Gideon was doing wasn’t showing bravery at all; he was simply beating out wheat in the winepress. This showed that he was frightened that even the little he had already gathered could be taken by the enemies. The angel did not look at him from what he was doing at that time, but from what God could use him to do later on. There are two things in this calling: 1) The LORD encouraged him and made him confident enough; 2) He was given a promise to strike the Midianites like one man (14-16). Consider: God wants to send you to reach out to those who are enslaved by sin. Song 22 (Salvation).
