Friday 15th August Matthew 22.23-33

August 15

Qn. 1

“’I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living” (32): The Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection of the dead, they only recognized the first five books of the Old Testament as written by Moses. Jesus used some words from these books they recognized to show them that they didn’t believe what was in those books they seemed to recognize. It is rather hard for someone to accept God’s truth when her or his heart is still hardened and arrogant. I am the God of Abraham (32a): Jesus used the words found in the second book of Moses to show that God doesn’t change (Ex. 3.6). Jesus did not say that God was but is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Even if they had died, he spoke of them as if still alive. The Sadducees had no way of excuse because even their books mentioned the resurrection of the dead.  People have no excuse at all for them to stay far away from God. Promise: Whoever believes in Jesus, even if dead, she or he will live (Heb. 13.8)
